What was that, OpenSea ?! Censorship?

Last update:

The beginning of the last month of summer was marked by a scandal related to the marketplace OpenSea, which recently raised $ 100 million... and the PolygonPunks collection, which, well, does not at all resemble the legendary CryptoPunks 🙂

But first, one should ask the question: “Why does anyone even buy these at first glance #CENSORSHIP 24x24 pixels weighing 8bit CryptoPunks for tens of thousands of dollars ?!

There is nothing surprising. At all times, many people wanted to stand out. Someone buys themselves a Rolex, someone luxury brands clothing. In the digital age, in the cryptotusovochka, the role of such a trick is played by CryptoPunks (not for everyone it is, but it is the place to be). Having a crypto bank is like having a collection of expensive watches and belonging to a narrow circle of adepts inspired by the idea of decentralization. Moreover, it is believed that this is the first collection on the Ethereum blockchain, although it is also possible to argue here, but this is not the main thing. The main community around CryptoPunks.

2019 year. In a few seconds Tyler Winklevoss will be dropped on the CryptoPunk wallet
2019 year. In a few seconds, Tyler Winklevoss will have an NFT in his wallet.

And because of what all the fuss, in fact?

OpenSea removed the PolygonPunks collection, which rose to the top in terms of trading volume a few days after the sale. For what? Why? Allegedly, a DMCA request arrived, and this by the way Digital Millennium Copyright Act... NFT collectors are furious.

PolygonPunks raised $ 1,25 million. In theory, this could be enough to create a marketplace on Polygon.

Such a call was thrown by one of the most zealous opponents of OpenSea in this struggle. @NFThippo... He calls for a market free of censorship, and even a petition was created on Change.org demanding the listing of PolygonPunks on OpenSea, and 116 people signed up to it. At the time of this writing, no petition could be found.

And this is information for those who love conspiracy theories: there is a rumor that PolygonPunks themselves sent a request to the DMCA for their collection to be removed from the market ... That's how it is ... But now PolygonPunks has its fans and trading volumes and $ 1,25 million. and a reason to create an analogue of a marketplace. But do they have enough skills to repeat the success of OpenSea?

Some experts of the NFT market still adhere to the conservative version, which is now the main one. This is the work of the developers  CryptoPunks owned by the company Larva Labs.

Whatever it was, there will be disputes as long as both collections are similar to each other, which means that disputes will never stop, to a small or large extent they will always be.

What do you think about this? Does OpenSea really turn into a corporation after receiving a large investment? Maybe someone just didn't like the increase in the supply of punks and somehow this could affect the exclusivity of the original collection? Why weren't other similar collections deleted? Or maybe this is a black PR move from PolygonPunks?
