Gamers have been in the metaverse for 30 years without knowing it

Last update:

According to Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, gamers have been in the metaverse for about 30 years, but many of them did not perceive the in-game worlds as metaverses. In an interview with Bloomberg Studio 1.0, Phil shared not only his opinion, but also an assumption why the players are in error. Those who develop new technologies present it as something new, but all this has been around for a long time. Phil Spencer is not surprised by this behavior of the players, because before the in-game worlds were not called anything, it was just the location of the game, and now they are metaverses.

Spencer said that he is cautious about new Web3 trends, including the Play-to-Earn mechanic, in his opinion, in this way developers create a workforce of gamers to monetize "certain" players. Previously, Spencer was critical of the use of the blockchain, including NFT in crypto games. Microsoft generally established a law prohibiting the exploitation of their projects.

Apparently, Phil Spencer is not talking about the metaverse as the evolution of the web, but about virtual worlds and MMORPGs, which have recently been called metaverses and in which interoperability is only in the plans.

As a reminder, in July 2022 Mojang Studiosowned by Microsoft, changed the rules regarding Minecraftto ban NFT projects using their platform. This decision was a blow, in particular, to the metaverse NFT Worlds, which had to abandon the use Minecraft as the basis of their virtual world.

In turn, Phil Spencer admitted that monetization among players has existed since the days of web2 games, and this is far from a new model for making money on games in modern realities.
